Massachusetts Family Literacy Consortium

“Our vision is successful families. Our mission is successful partnerships.”

The Massachusetts Family Literacy Consortium (MFLC) is made up of state agencies and other statewide organizations representing all areas of education and family support. The MFLC is a statewide initiative that builds on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts ' capacity to serve and sustain the literacy and support needs of families by increasing the coordination and integration of existing federal, state and local resources.

MFLC realizes that there will never be enough money to provide categorical family literacy funding for all Massachusetts families in need. Further, dedicated funding streams create a dependency on the funding sources.

Therefore, in order to meet its goal of coordination and integration of services,
the MFLC recognizes that agencies and organizations must partner together to:

•  change the way we do business

•  work across funding streams

•  permeate “the system” with family literacy, family support and workforce development services.

Discussions at the statewide level led to the creation of the Pathways to Family Success pilot projects. In 2002, five pilot projects were funded across the Commonwealth to plan and implement the creation and strengthening of local partnerships in order to coordinate and integrate education and family support programs. The MFLC assists the pilot projects in working with state agencies and provides advocacy for “relief” from barriers (such as public policies, issues of confidentiality and crossing funding streams).

The funding for the Pathways to Family Success Pilot Projects comes from the MFLC, the Massachusetts Department of Education and Verizon.
