Even Start
Holyoke Even Start Family Literacy Program has been developed by the Holyoke School Department for Holyoke parents who would like to strengthen their knowledge and skills in English, as well as support the literacy development of their child/children.Even Start is a federally funded, comprehensive Family Literacy program.
The initial grant was developed to meet the expressed need of Holyoke residents for evening English as Second Language (ESL) classes, as well as classes for their children. Additionally, the parents identified transportation as a major obstacle facing many local families. The program offers a stipend for transportation costs upon completion of each nine hours of program attendance. Finally, meals are offered to all families free of charge on a nightly basis.
The program is open to parents with children between the ages of 3-7 who have difficulty with reading, writing, or speaking the English language. By learning and expanding their English proficiency the parents/guardians will be able to give their child/children the support they need to understand and complete school assignments.
The Holyoke program is offering classes in parenting skills, adult education, early childhood, computers, job readiness and interactive literacy classes for both parent and child. All class lessons are in accordance with the Massachusetts Standards and Frameworks. A Home Visitor is also on staff to assist the families in implementing the literacy techniques learned in classes.
The program is currently being offered at the Peck Middle School, 1916 Northampton Street, Holyoke.
